Herbert “Joe” Joseph Alves Jr., 65, of Hilo died Nov. 4 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a former rubbish man for the City and County of Honolulu and a mechanic. Janice Maxwell Unger, 97, of Kailua-Kona died Nov. 1 in Keaau. Born in Long Beach, Calif., she was an educator and was instrumental in starting Parker School. She and her late husband Thomas Unger went on to own and operate the Honomu Plantation Store. Visitation starts at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Kailua-Kona.
